Claire Jones

Claire Jones is a Hoosier, born and bred. She was raised on a farm near Boggstown, IN, Shelby County, prior to WWII. Her life was primitive by today’s standards. No electricity. No television or other modern appliances. There was a battery radio, though.

She married Bob Jones (from Bedford, IN.) They had 3 children, and have been blessed with 3 grandchildrenand 10 great-grandchildren, so far.

Bob was an Air Traffic Controller, and they lived in New York City, and Akron, Ohio, before coming to the Indianapolis Tower; staying in Indianapolis area until Bob retired in 1981; he was Chief Controller at Bakalar (Columbus) for a few years before retiring completely. Claire smiles as she recalls the years when she and Bob were part of the aviation industry and their 46 years of marriage.

They both joined and became active in the Columbus Senior Center in 1990.Enjoying nearly all the activities and participated regularly, Claire became more active with the Center when Bob passed away in 1990. She performed with the Line Dancers until her right knee gave out; was an Investment Club member for 9 years, serving as secretary part of that time. Volunteering at the Fish fry, playing piano, the Red Hat Society, enjoying several day trips, and events at Club 50 have also kept her busy. Claire has also served as receptionist at the front desk and wherever else she is needed. She used to swim with the Senior Center group two or three times a week, but now she just can’t find the time to do it. Claire says, “I want to do it all, but there aren’t enough hours in the day.” Besides activities at Mill Race Center, Claire volunteers once a week at Love Chapel and attends North Christian Church.

It’s no secret for those who know Claire of the passion she has for the game of Bridge. “Bridge is my favorite, because it keeps my mind active, and now that I can’t be as physically active, I enjoy it more.” Claire started going to tournaments and earned Life Master in just 4 years, then she became certified as a Club Director, and Certified Teacher. She currently directs the Duplicate Bridge Club at Mill Race Center and also plays and teaches beginners classes.

Her health is still good, and she travels some, visiting family in Tennessee, Nevada, and Texas. Six of the Greatgrandchildren live in the Indianapolis area, and she sees them often. Claire stated in completing this interview, “LIFE IS GOOD.”
