Mark & Ann Harper
Member Spotlight

Mark and Ann Harper are a delightful couple. They have a zest for living that is contagious. Both are natives of Indiana. For 45 of their 55 year marriage, they have lived in Columbus. Ann is a registered nurse. They met at a St. Vincent’s Hospital dance during her days as a student nurse. In 1993 she retired from the Bartholomew Consolidated School district where she was the Director of Health Services.

HarperMark grew up in Indianapolis, attended Butler University, and received his degree from IU. He served his Air Force time in the Korean War. Most of his working years were spent working in the Electric Utility Industry. He was General Manager of Bartholomew Co. REMC. In 1993 he joined National Rural Utilities in Washington, D.C.. That entailed a lot of traveling around in 13 states, but he felt fortunate to be able to continue living in Columbus. Though he retired in 1993, he has found it difficult to stay away from his chosen field. He continues to freelance as a consultant to rural coops in several states. He also serves as interim CEO for some Rural Electric Co-ops.

Mark and Ann are thoroughly enjoying retirement. Neither is willing to become a couch potato. Ann enjoys reading, is involved in genealogy research, and machine quilting. Mark enjoys his computer and volunteering. He will halfheartedly admit to playing the banjo and the Dulcimer. Both feel an obligation to give back to the  community.

Both enjoy traveling. That’s probably why their biggest commitment to the Center is serving as Coordinators for the Elderhostel/Road Scholar program. That name really says it all. You’re never too old to learn or to travel. The program is a partnership between the Senior Center and IUPUC. It takes place the first week in June, and next year will be Mark and Ann’s 9th year with the program. They have many tales to tell about the traveling/ learning experiences they have had while participating in the program.

Mark and Ann spent Thanksgiving in Georgia meeting their first great-grandson. They have 3 sons, a daughter, and 4 grandchildren.

They think the new Mill Race Center will be an outstanding jewel in the community and look forward to all the activities planned there.
